Legendary Guitarist Velma Smith Passes

August 5, 2014 by admin

Pioneering female guitarist, Velma Smith, passed away on Thursday.

Smith was one of the very first female session musicians and left her stamp on a long, long list of albums from artists like Willie Nelson, Don Gibson, Waylon Jennings, and Roy Orbison.

This photo was taken when Velma Smith was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in January 2014.  Museum founder, Joe Chambers, gives Smith her medallion with an audience that includes (Late Show bassist) Will Lee, Neil Young, and Alex Orbison to name a few.  Roy Orbison was awarded the inaugural Iconic Riff Award for “Oh, Pretty Woman” that same night.

Rolling Stone: Watch Unseen Roy Orbison Footage in ‘The Way Is Love’ Video – Premiere

Exclusively at Rolling Stone Magazine!

Watch the NEW Roy Orbison music video for the new Roy Orbison song, “THE WAY IS LOVE” out today on Mystery Girl Deluxe from Roy’s Boys and Legacy Recordings. http://bit.ly/1lAp7WT

“Just as the song was pieced together around a recently recovered Orbison vocal track, the music video stitches together old clips of the late rock & roll legend. Because Roy originally recorded that vocal track on a boombox cassette player, the song was reworked by a team that included producer John Carter Cash and a group Roy’s son, Alex, describes as ‘some scientists with a super computer.'”

“USA TODAY premieres a studio demo of The Comedians, penned by [Elvis] Costello. Orbison’s son, Alex, describes it as ‘a beautiful song about forlorn, twisted abandonment’ and ‘one of the best ‘Orbison’ songs that Roy did not write, if not the best.'”
