Legacy Recordings: Roy Orbison Success & Sadness

December 6, 2013 by admin

“Just weeks before his death 25 years ago today on Dec. 6, 1988, Roy Orbison told Rolling Stone magazine that he couldn’t sum up his life in a paragraph, but might be able to do it through his songs. “Parts of Crying, parts of Pretty Woman, too, and Running Scared. . . . Pieces of my songs would tell the story.”

Though Orbison’s career spanned decades, it is possible that his star was burning brightest just as he was taken from this world.

Today, like everyday, we remember The Big O!

Let us also remember Roy’s Mystery Girl, Barbara Orbison, who passed away on this date just two years ago.

Please feel free to share your memories in the comments section below.

“Roy Orbison Longs for Home in ‘Blue Bayou’ Live – Premiere” Rolling Stone

Roy Orbison Longs for Home in ‘Blue Bayou’ Live – Premiere

By JOHN GENTILE

NOVEMBER 21, 2013 8:30 AM

This version of “Blue Bayou,” taken from a 1986 show in Texas, starts with Roy Orbison effortlessly playing dreamy guitar lines before that voice makes its entrance. Orbison’s smooth tenor-baritone is as strong as ever, and then, when he reaches the mid-section and raises his pitch, it’s like heaven.

Where Does Roy Orbison Rank on Our 100 Greatest Singers List?

The video comes from The Last Concert – 25th Anniversary Edition, a forthcoming CD and DVD package that includes an audio recording of the last performance Orbison gave, on December 4th, 1988. The singer died of a heart attack just two days later. The DVD includes a range of performances filmed between 1981 and 1986 in California and Texas, as well as Orbison’s last-ever interview, which he gave just after the December 4th show.

The Last Concert – 25th Anniversary Edition is due out on December 3rd from Legacy Recordings/Sony Music.
