Of the many wonderful people who have worked with and for the Orbison family, Derek Neill was truly one of a kind. It’s difficult to put into words the wealth of information that Derek possessed because the reality was- he was there. A lifelong fan, Derek knew Roy and sold merchandise for him when he was performing in Derek’s neck of the woods. After Roy’s death, Derek would go on to be an unofficial lead archivist for Barbara and later Roy’s Boys working alongside his brilliant wife, Hazel. Greatly anticipated, their annual pilgrimage to Nashville always included legendary stories, introducing any new staff to Iron Bru, and tucking away any new treasures Derek had managed to hunt down lately. To quote Alex Orbison, “he was a great guy and a character that fit in with our crazy family so well.” Derek Neill passed away on New Year’s Day after a hard fought illness. He will be dearly missed.
