Roy Orbison: The MGM Years Box Set 1965-1973 11 Studio Albums, 1 soundtrack, and 1 brand new compilation of b-sides & singles! 152 songs in total, fully remixed and remastered with restored original artwork to return them to their original glory.
In 1965 Roy Orbison was riding high following the success of recent smash hits highlighted by his iconic ‘Oh, Pretty Woman.’ Lured by a million-dollar contract that included a film deal his label Monument couldn’t offer, Roy left Monument and signed with MGM Records.
The MGM deal contained an almost frenetic recording and release commitment, requiring Roy to commence recording three full albums, plus multiple singles for each album, every year. Roy delivered with both vigor and quality, with his output sometimes exceeding 70 recordings per year. This MGM Years box set is a summation of that marvelous work—13 full-length albums including the long sought-after THE FASTEST GUITAR ALIVE soundtrack (Roy starred in the film) and a new collection of B-Sides & singles that have never before appeared on a full-length Roy Orbison album. This collection is the largest compilation of Orbison music to date.
All 152 songs in this set were transferred from the original multi-track tapes at famed Blackbird Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, and then mixed by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Chuck Turner at the Johnny Cash Cabin, with help from Roy’s son, Alex Orbison. They were then remastered by longtime Roy Orbison friend and GRAMMY®-winning engineer Richard Dodd. In order to make sure modern technology conveyed Roy’s original intent, they frequently compared their work to the original vinyl and its inherent warm sound.
This is some of Roy Orbison’s best, but also perhaps least known work—now all together for the first time with fully restored art and sound. Featuring a 65-page booklet filled with rare photos and liner notes by Alex Orbison, THE MGM YEARS box set is a collector’s dream!
ONE OF THE LONELY ONES is the newly discovered, never-before-heard, 1969 Roy Orbison album that has never been released until now! Recorded primarily between January and August of 1969 this album is an honest account, arguably more so than any other, of Roy Orbison’s life. Roy Orbison had endured two devastating losses- first, the loss of his beautiful young wife, Claudette, in 1966, and second, the tragic loss of his two young sons in September of 1968. The real-life account in the title track, ‘I’m sick and tired, uninspired/I’d rather be dead and done/Than to be what I’ve become/One of the Lonely Ones,’ comes from a place of honesty that all listeners can relate to. ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,’ is the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic that charted for Britain’s Gerry & the Pacemakers in 1965. The guitar-heavy ‘Child Woman, Woman Child’ can be considered the musical younger sister of ‘Oh, Pretty Woman.’ This album is mixed and expertly mastered by Grammy winning engineers. Package features new, period appropriate, original artwork.
Burlesque legend Tempest Storm stars in the brand new video for the title track of a brand new Roy Orbison album that had remained unreleased for 46 years. “One of the Lonely Ones.” The single and the album were recorded at a pivotal time in the life of Roy Orbison.
After going on tour with The Beatles during the height of Beatlemania, Roy Orbison was one of the few original 50s rock’n’rollers to hold his own among the bright young things of the Swinging Sixties. Better than that, he ended 1964 as the only American artist to top the UK singles chart that year – twice – with ‘It’s Over’ and ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’;
